highridge gate Highridge blues is situated on the edge of the Dartmoor National park near Okehampton, Devon.

We have lived at West Nymph Farm since 2003 along with our two daughters, Chloe and Freya. Originally it was a dairy farm which we had to alter considerably to enable us to house and farm our commercial cattle.

For many years we had used pedigree blue bulls on our large commercial herd of suckler cows, which proved invaluable. In our experience the blue has been the best crossing bull by far to reach those all important grades.

In 2006 we decided to cut back on our commercial cattle and spend more time developing a small herd of pedigree blues. We went to Chelford and bought our first pedigree female which was to be our foundation cow for Highridge Blues. Pawton Wisteria was sired by Visconti De St Fontaine and she proved herself a huge asset within our herd for her excellent calving record and consistency in her off spring. We continued to purchase females from well known herds such as Tamhorn, Ridge Dean and Norbreck, who's advice and help through their many years of experience has been greatly appreciated and of huge benefit to us.

During a visit to Norbreck Genetics, Phil Halhead took us to a farm situated in the Lancashire hills to the home of Pendle Blues where we fell in love with a six month ok'd heifer calf - Dazzle. She was exactly what we had dreamt of to make our herd what it is today. Another lucky find was Drift Domino, a young bull who became known all over the country for his outstanding qualities, proven by his almost un beaten show career through out 2010/2011/2012.

High standards of health and welfare is our up most priority. We are members of a CheCS recognised health scheme which involves annual testing for IBR, BVD, Lepto and Johnes being routine. Our herd has been accredited free of Johnes since 2008. We also record our breeding stock with breedplan so as to give our customers that extra bit of confidence.

Our aim for the future within the breed is to produce the type of animal that is well balanced, of gentle temperament, with good mobility, longevity and has the ability to calve naturally. We feel that using females such as Highridge Blues Glitter and Tamhorn Deidre we are able to do this and along with careful selection of the correct genetics we are able to produce blues to suit all needs.

Visitors and enquiries always welcome.
